(ē`ŏs), in Greek religion and mythology, goddess of dawn; daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia. Every morning she arose early and preceded her brother Helios into the heavens. Her husband was Astraeus, by whom she bore the stars and the winds—Notus, the south wind; Boreas, the north wind; and Zephyr or Zephyrus, the west wind. Because Eos made love to Ares, Aphrodite cursed her with an insatiable desire for young men. Among her many lovers were TithonusTithonus, in Greek mythology, prince of Troy; son of Laomedon. He was loved by the dawn goddess, Eos, who bore him Memnon. EOS uses 'virtual concatenation' to bond SONET channels together to accommodate Ethernet speeds as well as lower-speed channels (DS1, DS2, etc.) that travel as 'virtual tributaries' in SONET networks and 'virtual containers' in SDH networks. In the 1980s, EOS was compatible with Control Data's VSOS operating system.(4) (E/OS) (Emulator OS) A Linux-based virtual machine that combined the QEMU and Wine emulators along with the XFree86 version of the X Window windowing system. E/OS originated in 1995 as an open source DOS virtual machine. Although it was expanded in 2000 as a virtual platform for Windows, DOS, Mac, OS/2, BeOS and Linux applications, it was abandoned in 2008.
